Reported by: Zee crwenewswire Mideast correspondent.

The United Nations group of experts on the use of mercenaries says it will present a proposal for a possible international convention to regulate activities of private military and security firms. A five-day meeting will be held at the UN headquarters in new York.

The UN Working Group on the Use of Mercenaries, will brief academics, non-governmental organizations and permanent missions on the content and scope of its proposal which is aimed at closing the “legal gap” that covers their activities at the international level.

The UN experts, since the group was formed, have been monitoring the impact of mercenaries and private military and security companies on human rights.

The issue of the private security companies has been debated in the media because of the suspicious activities of companies like Blackwater (XE) in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

Blackwater was sharply criticized when the news of its personnel killing 17 innocent civilians in Iraq came to light through the media. In Pakistan Blackwater`s activities have also been considered as a threat to the national security of the country.
